Movies [Jul. 24th, 2008|01:24 pm]

My jaw muscle and neck muscles on the left side hurts like a motherfucking bitch, and so I haven't had much energy or inspiration to write the last few days. Which is a shame, but, there you go. Life trips up my plans and there's nothing new about that. *g* So, I have watched some Japanese movies.

Ju-on - The Curse I had on DVD, and I was finally in the mood for watching some gruesome and strange Japanese horror. :-) This is apparently the TV movie that started the whole Grudge thing. So, it's pre-The Grudge. Not that is noticeable because of the very non-linear way of story-telling in it.

What's up with that anyway? This is certainly not the first Japanese movie I watch that tells the story in bits and pieces, jumping back and forth in time, and it won't be the last, I know. It's not very common in Western film, but seems to be not unusual at all in Japanese. I am not familiar enough with Korean and Chinese movies to make a judgement about it there. I kind of like the non-linear stories, but it can sometimes be a tad confusing.

Jo-on - The Curse was pretty good, I thought. It had that usual creepy undertone, and the sound effects that make the hairs on your arms stand on end. *g*

Then I watched Ju-on - The Grudge. I suppose this is the one that the US film industry made a remake of? I have no interest at all in seeing that one, sticking to the belief that the original version is superior. ;-)

I quite liked this one as well. Of course, it also had the non-linear story-telling, but I was expecting it this time, so it wasn't as confusing. Let me just say that the whole grudge-curse thing is really scary! People just being in this house or in contact with someone who's been in the house are cursed, and that is more than a little terrifying. It's not like these victims had done anything to the curser or haunter. They were just in the wrong place, at any time. *shudder*

I'll grab Ju-on - The Grudge 2 soon. I guess there won't really be anything resolved in it, because that tends to not be the point of Japanese horror. *g* There is no real happy ending and all is safe. :-)

After all that horror, I felt in the mood for some fantasy/adventure/pseudo-historical instead. Gojoe proved to be a rather good choice for that. :-)

There's what seems to be a cursed bridge that no mortal is allowed to pass, soldiers of an army that keeps getting killed by a demon... and the monk who shows up after having had a vision telling him he has to kill this demon. There's also rivalry and war between two clans, one having almost wiped out the other and now seemingly having to pay the price for that.

Lots of sword fighting, a few nice-looking men, cool story and an odd twist here or there. I'll probably watch this again some time. (Which is rather high praise from me since I tend to only watch a movie once, unless it's really good.)

[mood | drained]

Okay, in regards to the recent Fan History wank. I don't particularly like touching on wank to be bluntly honest. But the fact of the matter is that I know three people whose real names have been connected to their fan names on the FH wiki over the past few years (two of them within the past six months or so) and frankly, for me personally, that's just beyond the pale. It breaks a cardinal rule of fandom.

I would sincerely request that everyone go read the following posts if you haven't already. Not because you should participate in wank, but because this is your fandom too, and you should be aware of what's going on. I'm not going to tell you what to think about the posts. Make your own mind up after you read them.

Also, just in courtesy of [info]svmadelyn's post here, it looks like as of August 4, the infamous FanLib will be shutting its doors. Well. Hm.

Awwww! I got fic today! :-) I love getting fic or art, you know. I think it's really special and I get all warm and fuzzy inside, because people have taken time and effort to create something. It's so cool!

[info]vayshti wrote me a wonderful glimpse into the lives of Ukitake/Hisagi! It's filled with sweet Ukitake and an adorable and conflicted Shuuhei: The Old Guard.

And [info]cmc42 wrote Feelings, a Byakuya/Renji ficlet, for me and another person! It's cute and funny, and features a confused Renji. *g*

I also got a Death Note phone strap in the mail today! From one of my co-workers! Wheee! :-)

[music |L's Theme-Yoshihisa Hirano and Hideki Taniuchi]

Phew! Much as I love having people over, it's also a bit exhausting. Especially the part with the dishes afterwards. LOL

But I had a good time yesterday. There was a slight change of plans for my stepdad, who suddenly had to go away on a meeting that evening, so he showed early instead with a beautiful flower arrangement he'd bought for me. Then, just before the others were going to show up, I had a mild crisis and flurry of panic: my coffeemaker had managed to get broken while I wasn't using it! It leaked water all over the place, so I had to throw myself on the phone and catch my mum before she arrived here and get her to drive back home and get hers. Otherwise, there wouldn't have been any coffee! And that would have been a catastrophe, believe me.

But with that arranged, everything worked out fine. :-)

I'd bought some blue cheeses and a garlic soft cheese and a hard cheese to go with the crackers I'd also bought. Grapes, of course. And cookies, and the pie. *g* It was popular and I got much praise for it. What's fun is to do something that is gluten- or grains-free and people get all surprised that it's so yummy. LOL

It was actually good that my stepdad couldn't stay, because there would have been problems fitting another person around the table. Not that we were horribly many - mum, her best friend (who's like an aunt to me), my foster bro, Elle and her bf.. and me. But one more and there wouldn't have been room on my coffee table. Then again, we could have put him in the kitchen, because he drinks tea, not coffee. ;-) The ex and his gf couldn't show, so I'll see them another day. We're talking picnic somewhere next week perhaps.

And since it was my birthday, no one objected to my choice of background music, which consisted of a mix of JRock and JPop, with lots of Gackt. *g* I'm working on converting them!

I am now the proud owner of yet another suitcase. Well, this one is tiny, more cabin sized, which was something I lacked for short trips. And... it's black and white, zebra striped! *g* I love it.

I also got a beautiful purple glass cake plate thingie, a gift card from one of my fav clothing shops (Flash), some bits and bobs, and a hand blender with assorted attachments. I really needed one! Doing everything with a fork is a bit hard on my wrists. ;-) Oh, and I got a bottle of Amarula liqueur too. It was surprisingly yummy! I'm not so much for liqueurs with cream and such (preferring things like Marie Brizard and Galliano), but this was good!

I'd also like to give my flist a big hug and say thank you to [info]nishizono, [info]imma, [info]one_short_fuse, [info]viverra_libro, [info]ringspells, [info]maddiec24, [info]kabal42, [info]ships_harry, [info]nehalenia, [info]liriaen, [info]alisanne, [info]valis2, [info]coffee_n_cocoa, [info]mnemosyne_1, [info]fodirteg, [info]odogoddess and the Malfoys ([info]alabastard and [info]alabastardragon) for the birthday wishes and/or cards. :-) Thank you [info]ladypratt for the champagne on my LJ profile! *g* it looks very festive! And [info]vayshti sent Hisagi Shuuhei to me with a cake! LOL He's so cute!

Also, thank you so much to [info]one_short_fuse for the book! She sent me Shadows Return by Lynn Flewelling! And a big thank you to [info]ships_harry for a lovely Malfoycest drawing!!! :-) Fanart! For me! *squee*

And if I missed someone, please point me in the right direction!

Miles To Go Before We Sleep, Part Two, Morgan/Reid [Jul. 21st, 2008|08:04 pm]

severity_softly
Title: Miles To Go Before We Sleep, Part Two
Authors: [info]innerslytherin and [info]severity_softly
Pairing: Morgan/Reid
Rating: PG-13 this part (up to NC-17 for the entire fic)
Summary: After Reid goes off the rails in Texas, Morgan decides Reid needs a friend to support him through whatever he's going through. Several cases and "awesomely" bad sci-fi flicks later, they both realize "friendship" isn't exactly what they want...but sorting through the baggage that stands in the way of a closer relationship is more difficult than either of them expected. Starting immediately after "Elephant's Memory" and running beyond the end of "Lo-fi", this is a multi-chaptered, non-WIP fic.
Word count: this part, ~7000; overall, ~130K
Spoilers: Entire series - specifically Profiler, Profiled, The Big Game/Revelations, Elephant's Memory, In Heat, Tabula Rasa, and Lo-fi. (This chapter takes place before and during In Heat.)
Warnings: Overall: UST, references to past sexual abuse, drug use/references to past drug use
Notes: Written in RP format. Not currently AU, but it will be after season four starts, as we're writing our own ending to Lo-fi. :) A million thanks to [info]mnemosyne_1 for being an awesome beta! :D

Pie and torrent tracker. Not in the same mix. [Jul. 21st, 2008|12:32 pm]

[Tags|, , , ]

I have decided to not make a cake for today. Getting naturally gluten-free sponge cake for it proved to be both hard and expensive, and I am so not going to bake it. Nope. And by naturally gluten-free I mean that it doesn't contain wheat that they'd de-glutenised only. That would work for my mum, but it doesn't for me. No grains for me, thank you. So, I have come up with plan B, even if it means no real birthday cake.

Plan B is making a fruit pie instead. :-) Because making pie crust is a piece of cake (um... pardon the pun), and doesn't require eggs and lots of energy. Just rice flour, soy flour, non-dairy "butter", and some vanilla sugar. Plus the juice from the now-thawed berries. Then the berries and fruit on top of that when the crust is done. Back into the oven, and then later I'll top it with thick custard.

All gluten-free and dairy-free. Yay!

**

On another note, I am getting tired of battling with the private tracker on Avistaz. For Mac-users, they only allow a torrent program called Transmission. Fine and dandy, expect that the tracker doubles the download data. Every time! So, if I dl a movie from them which is 1.37 G (which is one of the most common sizes there), it's records as me dl-ing double that, and so I have to seed double to get my ratio up to 1.0. Grrr!

All they say is that it's definitely not something wrong with their tracker, although Transmission is not the only program that it doubles the data for. O.o I wish someone would be more specific in the forums, instead of just saying "go with an older version", because I've done that and the result is the same. Exactly which of the 30 or so versions of the program works with the damn tracker? *le sigh*

I have still managed to get my ratio up to 4.73. Because am persistent, and I have patience. Patience is probably my superpower. ;-) Not very useful, though, and it gives me a lot of heartache at times because it makes me silently wait instead of speaking up. I have issues, I know. *g*

I just finished the last act of Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and cut for spoilers.... )

And in other fannish news...I swear to God if The Middleman doesn't run for at least ten years I'm going to cry. I'm beginning to heart this show with the fiery heat of a thousand burning suns. Hm. Between Pushing Daisies, The Middleman, and Dr Horrible, I seem to have developed a huge love lately for quirky, witty, fantastical shows with snarky, geeky chic characters. \0/

All right. Now to scrabble in the cupboards for lunch, curl up on the couch and delve into fanfic for Terminus prep, and maybe even do a bit of RPing. \0/ I heart Saturdays.

Series: Red Pineapple Romance
Title: One Step Closer To Disaster
Fandom/Characters: Bleach - Byakuya/Renji
Rating: Mild (PG)
Summary: Byakuya knows Renji has more than a work-related interest in him. With that knowledge and the upper hand it gives him, he decided to set a trap, like a cat playing with its prey before dealing the final blow.
Disclaimer: The boys belong to Kubo Tite. I'm just borrowing them, having them do things the original creator probably never thought of.
Notes: ~1370 words. Fourth in the series of fics that started with "A Volatile Valentine's". Thanks to the lovely [info]nishi_shinji for the beta! ♥

Ж-Men...but not the ones you might expect!
This week LJ Russia launched Ж-Men, a new comedy series about superheroes, inspired by the LJ communities dedicated to superheros, comics and cartoons. The title's "Ж" comes from ЖЖ, the nickname for LiveJournal in Russia.

Ж-Men's script is written by a group of LJ enthusiasts who also happen to be television professionals. Who knew? Following the premiere, five more episodes will be broadcast over the next two weeks. We hope you find the series fresh and enjoyable.

This is, of course, an experiment for LiveJournal. As always, we'd love to hear what you think!

Reading, writing, coffee, and wishing. [Jul. 15th, 2008|05:22 pm]

ldybastet
[Tags|, , ]

I have been reading. A few day's ago, I finished "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. The "Author's preferred text", which is apparently longer and odder than the first version that was published. I wouldn't know, since I've only read this one.

Lately, there's been a few scattered articles/blogs/discussions about how Google makes us stupid, how the Internet in general makes us lose the capability to focus on text for a longer period of time, like... 5 minutes. I've read those and not bothered to get involved, not quite able to put into words why I haven't agreed, when the fact is that the last few years I have read very few books. So why?

After reading American Gods, I think I have an answer that works for me at least.

This was the first new book in ages that has managed to grab me and keep that hold for long enough to make me really read and not want to do anything but turn the pages and find out what happens next. There are a few of my fav books that I've reread (Riddle-Master, for example), but other than that, a lot of the books I've tried reading lately has been rather ... I don't know. They have not held my interest. And I'd like to think that it's not only my fault for being online and writing and beta-reading a lot.

If the book isn't good, the characterisation flat and the plot not very interesting (and the occasional typo or odd use of punctuation that I've been taught is omg!wrong), then it doesn't matter how much I'd like to read or how in the mood I am for a good book. If the book isn't good, or well-written, then I will put it down and go do something else.

American Gods is one of the good books, and I was pleased to find out that I can still read. :-)

**

I'm writing the fourth part of the so-called chocolate fic (ByaRen) now. I have even managed to get a name for the series. Yay me! *g* I have about 580 words so far, and Byakuya is manipulative and making Renji blush. :-)

**

Remember my puzzlement over a type of coffe brought home from London doesn't taste the same as the same type of coffee when I buy it in the shops here?

It's a mystery no longer. Or rather, it's another mystery now. Simply put: it's not the same coffee. Both are Nescafé, the green one, the dark roast. However, when I just bought a new jar here because the one I brought with me from London is almost empty, I see that the colour is not the same. The one I just bought has a lighter colour than the one bought in England. Huh? They should be the same, and hello? in Sweden we like our coffee strong!!!

The mystery now is, why the hell isn't it the same? And who the hell thought it was a good idea to pour a lighter roasted coffee in our jars?

**

I have to clean my flat. Really I have to. There will be people here on Monday demanding coffee and cake and wanting to see how I live and what progress I've made on the decorating of my home. Which is none, since I still haven't managed to get my curtain rods up. *sigh*

That's what I've wished for for my birthday, btw - help to get my curtain rods up and my lamps too. Oh, and licorice ice-cream from the ice-cream truck. But no one believes me when I tell them that's what I want. :-( I mean, absinthe is rather expensive, so I'm happy with ice-cream of similar flavour, and they want me to give them more choices? ;-) I think it's for the best that I don't tell them the stuff I do want, because even though my family is open and stuff, they still think me a little weird for enjoying gay porn so much. *g* And they wouldn't know how to get a hold of the manga I want either... Ah well, at least I'm at home this year, and able to celebrate my bday with my family. There will be strawberries I think. There's always strawberries on my birthday cake. Mmmm... strawberries.

[music |Maria Callas: Variations on Deh torna, mio bene]

I just went back and answered all the feedback that had been left on my [info]hp_beholder and [info]snarry_games fics. I still have to go back and answer my [info]hd_worldcup comments, but that's probably going to have to happen in spurts through this week, I'm afraid.

I absolutely suck at answering feedback. I truly do. I recognize that about myself, and it's a fault of mine that I completely, utterly, entirely despise. It's not that I avoid feeback on purpose. I always mean to come back and answer the comments....I just frequently get caught with work, life, writing and/or other responsibilities that keep me from answering right away (not that any of those are a proper excuse really) and then by the time I get a chance it's, er, three months later and I'm horribly embarrassed to do so because I'm quite aware of my amount of fail. *facepalms* And it's worse when it's an anonymous fic for a fest because I'm afraid to answer those comments before the fest ends on fear of giving myself away (or accidentally answering while still logged in). Sigh. *pounds head against keyboard slowly*

My new fannish goal is to get better at answering fic feedback. And I guess I can start by just taking the bull by the horns and trying to catch up on old feedback, right? Right. So, yeah. If you just got a comment from me on an old fic (or if you get one in upcoming days), er, huge apologies for being so late. *flushes* Trust me when I say I'm awfully embarrassed by it. :(

Okay. I have to write now....
